New update for WhatsApp: "Close friends" feature is coming

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on this feature in iOS beta version 25.23.10.80. This feature, which mirrors Instagram's popular "Close Friends" tool, is expected to be released in the coming days.

WhatsApp Status, used by over 1.5 billion people daily, currently allows users to share with all contacts, exclude certain contacts, or manually select them. The upcoming feature will allow users to create a dedicated "Close Friends" list within privacy settings. This will streamline the process and allow users to share more personal content with a select group.

When sharing a status, users can choose to share it with all their contacts or a list of Close Friends they've created. These updates will be marked with a different colored ring so viewers know the content is private.

Importantly, users won't receive any notifications when they're added or removed from their Close Friends list. This will protect privacy and prevent social awkward situations. Statuses shared with Close Friends will also disappear within 24 hours and are protected by end-to-end encryption.
